Skilled Nursing Frequently Asked Questions

What is skilled nursing?

Unlike independent living or assisted living communities, a skilled nursing facility offers short- or long-term 24/7 care provided by licensed nurses and therapists, including RNs, LPNs, and Certified Nurse Aides. Skilled nursing is a type of care that goes beyond what you’d find at an assisted living facility.

What qualifies someone for skilled nursing care?

Individuals who need medical care after illness, injury or surgery, post-hospital stay or without hospitalization. Skilled nursing helps with activities of daily living (ADLs) but at a higher level. Some health conditions that could require long-term care include:

  • Stroke
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Diabetes
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Fractures
  • Fall-related injury
  • Orthopedic surgeries
  • Permanent disabilities
  • Dementia

How is skilled nursing paid for?

Skilled nursing services at Water’s Edge Health and Rehabilitation Center offer flexible payment options:

  • LifeCare® residents: Unlimited days of skilled nursing included at significantly below-market rates (only ancillary charges apply)
  • Medicare: Covers qualifying short-term stays, typically up to 30 days following hospitalization
  • Medicaid: Accepted at our certified health center
  • Private pay: Available for all residents
  • Long-term care insurance: Additional payment option

Residents and their families benefit from predictable costs and asset preservation. Portions of entrance and monthly fees may be tax deductible as prepaid health care expenses, providing financial security unavailable at most skilled nursing home facilities.

It’s important for individuals and their families to explore all available financial options and plan for long-term care needs in advance. Additionally, consulting with a financial advisor, tax professional or elder law attorney can provide guidance on navigating payment options and planning for future care needs.

What is the difference between a skilled nursing facility and a nursing home?

While often used interchangeably, key differences exist. Skilled nursing services require registered nurses to provide medical care — wound care, medication management, physical therapy, and post-surgical rehabilitation. A skilled nursing facility like Water’s Edge delivers this clinical level of care with 24/7 Registered Nurses and a Medical Director.

Traditional nursing homes typically provide a lower level of care focused on custodial assistance with daily activities. Water’s Edge maintains the highest staff-to-resident ratio in Martin and St. Lucie counties, offering both semi-private rooms and private accommodations. Our Medicare-certified center achieves a higher star rating than many standard facilities, ensuring residents and their families receive exceptional health care.

Do I have to pay for additional health care?

LifeCare® at Sandhill Cove means you receive skilled nursing care in our health center, regardless of how long or how often, without paying a daily fee — ever. The only additional cost above your regular monthly fee is to cover the two extra meals per day, plus any ancillary costs and personal laundry.

Other services such as chiropractic care, acupuncture, massage, and outpatient rehab therapies are available at additional cost, and may be covered by your private health insurance or Medicare. Visits to the nurse practitioner in our clinic are covered by your private health insurance or Medicare. However, routine services such as flu shots may incur a nominal fee.
